In Montepulciano, our “Trattoria di Cagnano” brand offers a variety of quality facilities for visitors: in addition to the restaurant of the same name, we manage some holiday apartments with garden in the town centre, as well as two B&Bs: Meublé Evoè, and Meublé La Dimora del Corso.
Montepulciano id often called “the Pearl of the 1500s” for its wealth of art treasures by the leading architects and artists of the Renaissance, dating from the golden days of the Medici rule. The town preserves the enchanted beauty of its historic centre and showcases an endless series of palaces and churches attesting to the strategic, economic and cultural prominence of this Florentine outpost in Sienese territory.
Overlooking the splendid Piazza Grande – which has served again and again as a backdrop for movies and tv adverts – are the late 16th C. Cathedral and the Town Hall, clearly inspired by the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence; all around the square, is an array of elegant Renaissance palaces.
Housed in the Neri-Orselli palace, the Museo civico Pinacoteca Crociani hosts important temporary shows beside exhibiting a remarkable collection of Sienese and Florentine paintings, an archaeological section and a beautiful compendium of Della Robbia terracotta reliefs.
In the valley below the town – surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and lovingly restored farmhouses – there rises the grand and elegant Tempio di San Biagio, the masterpiece of architect Antonio da Sangallo the Elder.
Montepulciano boasts a lively cultural scene: let us just mention the theatre season of the Teatro Poliziano, the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte festival and the folk musical plays of the Bruscello. The Bravìo is a race in which two champions for each of the city neighbourhoods push a large wine barrel up the steep Corso from the Porta al Prato to the main Piazza.
Montepulciano lies at the heart of a large thermal district and the Montepulciano Spa, located at Sant'Albino, exploits the healing properties of the hot waters and muds.
The hillside vineyards of our surroundings produce the fine Rosso DOC, but especially the outstanding Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, one of the most famous and widely appreciated wines in the world. Among the other dainties of the area are the tasty Chianina meat, the excellent Pecorino sheep's milk cheese from Pienza and the extra virgin olive oil. You can savour all these treats (and more!) in our Trattoria di Cagnano restaurant, where we await you to sample age-old flavours and traditional recipes.
